My Grandad was a storyteller. He called it spinning a yarn.Grandad could weave the most exciting tales about his parents and grandparents as they found their homes in this country, traveling by ox-drawn wagon from Maryland to Indiana to Kansas, and dreams of settling in the Rio Grande valley. An insatiable need for adventure and new horizons defined the spirits of several generations of the Lambdin family.
And my maternal grandparents as well. My Grandpa Eastman, who marched across France in World War I, was so proud of his and Grandmas travels to all 48 contiguous states in the U.S. That was at a time before interstate highways and the frequent air travel we know today. He was 77 when he died and was planning a driving trip from Illinois to Alaska, a considerable undertaking in the 1970s before the completion of the Al-Can Highway.
So its in my blood, this need to see and experience the world. I think about my grandparents sometimes when Im departing on or returning from an adventure that they surely dreamed about. A good portion of their spirits are traveling with me, I know, and they look over my shoulder as I write.
I want to be able to share the journey with them, and with others as well. Come with me. Another adventure is on the horizon, and oh, the beautiful fabric we can make from the yarns we spin together.
